The recent death of Arafat and the uncertainty of who is to follow him as leader of the embattled fledgling Palestine raised some new questions for me; about both the mideast peace process and the history of extremism and moderation.

To begin, why were Arafat and Rabin able to attempt a peace? The answer seems to be that both were involved in the military struggles of their respective peoples (Rabin commanded the IDF during the Six-Day War, Arafat headed the PLO). Rabin seems to have been a bit short of laurels, as he later died at the hands of a militant Israeli. Read More

In 2000, Bush said he would include carbon dioxide on a list of air pollutants requiring federal oversight, a stand he abandoned within weeks of taking office. A month after the Sept. 11 attacks, Bush's spokesman said the president believed a homeland security department that Democrats proposed was "just not necessary." A year after that, Bush had switched course and was lashing some Democrats for not moving quickly enough to approve the agency.

Humor is a powerful tool; if a joke is funny, it gets passed around. A statement, even if only a joke, stated often enough, takes on a truth of its own. There are enough jokes about Kerry going around ("waffles with French dressing" etc.) that you could probably put out a slim tome.

We need to start using this tool ourselves, and get these out there. I'm not talking about forwarded emails, but actually passing the funny around and letting it spread.

Since I'm not funny enough to do this myself, what have you, people?
